More Information on Patteda Anchu Sarees!
Patteda Anchu sarees are handwoven in the handloom hub of Gajendragarh, Karnataka. The villages in and around the hub are equipped with hand weaving this exquisite cotton saree. The sari commands as much religious significance as it does social relevance. History has it that it was respectfully offered to the native goddess before being gifted to a bride-to-be, the weave being a marker of a prosperous life. It later served as a hand-me-down to the goddess’s devadasis too. The sari is also believed to have been worn by women of the Lingayat community, which comprises devotees of Lord Shiva.
The traditional patteda anchu distinguishes itself with its signature double-bordered design (with both borders usually boasting different colors) and fine checks. The pattern of the weave is validated by its name itself, where “anchu” translates to “border” in English.
