Madurai Sungudi Sarees, once dyed is kept in the wet state for 2-3 days before being washed in Vaigai River water. This river water is believed to add a bbeautiful sheen to these sarees. This process is then repeated many times before steaming and drying the sarees on the river banks. That's the reason sometimes sand/ dirt is found on the sarees. However these spots can easily be cleaned with a wash with mild detergent.
