Maheshwari Handloom

Maheshwari sarees is a handwoven variety that originates from the city of Maheshwar. Maheshwari saree was first conceived by Queen Ahalya Bai Holkar in the 18th Century along with few expert weavers from Surat and Malwa in a 9 yard format in pure silk and Pure Gold/Silver zari. However with time, the fabric predominantly used has changed to Silk Cotton.  These sarees are characterized by a typical style of border, striped palluand mostly plain body. They are also available with checks and now butis are also very commonly noticed on the body. The specialty of Maheshwari sarees is its reversible border, also known as Bugdi, which can be worn on both sides if the saree has a plain body. The patterns on the border are inspired from the Maheshwar Fort and Narmada river.
